Kindergarten is the first year of our Elementary Program and the teachers craft this experience with an important journey in mind — to instill a love of learning. Children at this age are naturally curious and interested in the world around them. The River School highlights this by encouraging our Kindergarten children to explore their interests through themes, as well as appreciate and refine their understanding of literature and math.
Children learn how to collaborate and cooperate with one another, and practice problem-solving strategies in a meaningful way. They enjoy classrooms full of dramatic play, sensory tables, math manipulatives, rich libraries with cozy reading nooks, engaging science centers, and hands-on art tools. Kindergarten students are active participants in their learning and become seekers of knowledge. Abstract reasoning is practiced and conceptual understanding is explored. As is the case in all River years, the students and their families are welcomed into the community as partners in their own learning. Teachers work with students in a developmentally appropriate way to allow children to grow at individual levels through a warm, kind, engaging environment.
