Discover the Magic of The River School

We Are Experts in Childhood Development
We know that first steps matter, and we cherish being a part of a child’s early years, helping them develop a love of learning. Dedicated to children 18 months through Grade 3 since 2000, we bring energy and innovation to teaching core academics, and foster children’s growth in language, literacy and social skills, creativity and problem solving. Our teaching teams of master's level educators and speech-language pathologists provide a nurturing, developmentally appropriate environment in each classroom. Our children learn to work and play collaboratively, preparing them to be tolerant, thoughtful and engaged members of society.

In October 2021, we were excited to announce the launch of our Upper Elementary Program (Grades 4-6), with a confirmed Grade 4 class for Fall 2022. We’ve developed a spectacular curriculum, and we intend to create the most progressive and experiential Upper Elementary Program in the Washington DC area!

We are now accepting applications for Grade 4. Contact Megan Campbell in Admissions to learn more!

We Are a Small School for Young Children
Small schools ensure individualized attention. We maintain the most favorable class sizes and student-to teacher ratios in the region. Your child will be known, challenged and supported, and will quickly feel a part of a warm and engaging community. What better way to be open to new experiences and ideas, than to start from a place of comfort and security?
We Are Pioneers in Early Childhood Research and Practice

Ninety-five percent of our faculty hold a master’s degree or higher, giving us the expertise to develop new teaching strategies that help every child optimize their development. Our faculty present at conferences nationally and internationally, publish in peer-reviewed journals and train graduate students from a number of universities each year.
