Mouth Time & Sound Spot
Mouth Time
Mouth Time is part of The River School’s early literacy program for students ages 18 months to 4-5 years old. It supports the acquisition of skills important for literacy development and provides a developmentally-appropriate way for young children to access and manipulate the sounds of the English alphabet which are too abstract for young children to understand. By focusing on Mouth Time Symbols that represent the mouth shape and placement of articulators and through easy-to-understand mouth shapes, young children can establish sound-symbol correspondence. Mouth Time occurs each day, and every lesson targets the following parameters: phonemic and phonological awareness; oral motor awareness; strength and control; speech production; vocabulary and concepts; and auditory processing.
Sound Spot
Sound Spot is the next step to River’s early literacy program for students in Kindergarten - Grade 3 with introductory lessons beginning in PreK. The program uses a systematic approach to work on letter-sound correspondence, blending and segmenting sounds and decoding and encoding letters, and it provides explicit instruction in order to draw children’s attention to the phonemic rules of the English language. Sound Spot incorporates the class theme in order to create a cohesive, meaningful experience, which strengthens students’ spoken language and their ability to perceive, conceptualize and manipulate sound segments. Occurring each day, these parameters are targeted during lessons: phonemic and phonological awareness; oral motor awareness; strength and control; speech production; vocabulary and concepts; and auditory processing.
