Recurring gifts using a credit or debit card are a convenient way to support The River School. You can set up recurring gifts by emailing our Development Team to arrange for a monthly, quarterly or annual recurring gift. If you have additional questions, call Genevieve Courbois at 202.380.9210.

Find out if your employer has a Charitable Gift Matching Program or other Community Giving Program such as Charity of the Month. Some employers will match volunteer hours, too. Your assistance with corporate support is invaluable.

If your company has a Charitable Gift Matching Program, request a matching gift form from your employer and send it completed and signed with your gift to River, or use an employee portal to submit the form after you make your gift. We will do the rest. The impact of your gift to River may be doubled or possibly tripled!

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is like a charitable investment account with the sole purpose of supporting charitable organizations you care about—like The River School. When you contribute cash, securities or other assets to a DAF at a public charity (e.g., Fidelity Charitable), you are commonly eligible to take an immediate tax deduction. The funds can be invested for tax-free growth and you can recommend grants to the charities of your choice.

If stock you have held for more than a year has increased in value, you may want to consider donating it. By transferring ownership to The River School, you support River, avoid capital gains tax you would pay if you sold the stock and can claim a charitable income tax deduction for the stock's fair market value.

Please let us know of your intent and include the stock name, number of shares and transfer timing. Your broker can obtain transfer instructions by emailing Jen Lynch, Director of Advancement or calling 202.380-9208. The stock gift will be valued at the average price per share on the date it is received in The River School’s account, which will be included in a gift receipt.

If you are 70½ or older, you are able to make tax-wise gifts to The River School through your IRA. By authorizing a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA, individuals can donate up to $100,000 each calendar year to eligible charities like River.

Distributions, which count toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), must be made directly from the IRA trustee to River. By donating this way, those funds are not counted as part of your adjusted gross income and you don't pay taxes on the gifted amount.
