The Magic of The River School
We Are Experts in Childhood Development
At The River School, a top private school in Washington DC, we know that first steps matter. We cherish being a part of a child's early years, helping them develop a love of learning. Dedicated to children 18 months through Grade 5, we bring energy and innovation to teaching core academics, and foster children’s growth in language, literacy and social skills, creativity and problem solving. Our play-based, thematic curriclum seamlessly integrates Literacy, Math, Social Studies, Science, Drama, Music, Visual Arts, Physical Education, Creative Movement, and Library Sciences.
Our Upper Elementary Program (Grades 4-5) features project-based, inquiry-driven immersive learning experiences. A River graduate can think critically, engage in meaningul inquiry, solve problems and persevere through academic and social challenges, collaborate and communicate effectively, exhibit strong reading, writing and math skills, and be a kind, respectful change agent.
We Are a Small School for Young Children
Small schools ensure individualized attention. We maintain the most favorable class sizes and student-to teacher ratios in the region. Your child will be known, challenged and supported, and will quickly feel a part of a warm and engaging community. What better way to be open to new experiences and ideas, than to start from a place of comfort and security?
We Are Pioneers in Early Childhood Research and Practice
Ninety-five percent of our faculty hold a master’s degree or higher, giving us the expertise to develop new teaching strategies that help every child optimize their development. Our faculty present at conferences nationally and internationally, publish in peer-reviewed journals and train graduate students from a number of universities each year.
Our philosophy is grounded in The River School’s Pillars, ten elements that define our remarkable school.
