With school as a primary community in a child’s life, teachers are charged with the complex responsibility of establishing constructive boundaries. These boundaries represent more than limits, they also represent parameters for social learning, which is often as important as mastering academic challenges to be prepared to move to the next year of school. Habits set in place early in a child’s education are the foundation for continued confidence and self-esteem.

We will examine the intersection of executive skills with personal conduct as a critical axis for child development. The emphasis will be on the positive social and emotional effects of various types of self-control. We will explore how to establish and communicate healthy boundaries, and the complexity of managing reprimands. Time will be allotted for group discussion and case study.
